Upper Wolf Jaw Mtn. (4,185) back to ADK 46
December 18, 2008: Long story short... we took a wrong turn and hiked the wrong mountain. The initial plan was to hike Mt. Marcy. We went to the Adirondack Loj trail head (with no map). When we got there, a couple guys were getting ready to hike as well, they had a map so we asked them if we were in the right place. They told us to go to this other trail head (20 mi away) and that it would be easier. (WE NEVER SHOULD HAVE LISTENED) In the end we still had a good time, hiked about 17 miles in snow shoes, and made it to the top of a mountain, although not the one we intended on.
It was just a few days after an ice storm as well, so the mountain was coated with a layer of ice, followed by some fresh snow. This made the steep sections of the hike difficult (and entertaining). We got some great video of some of the more challenging sections.

"I can't get up" This was one of the many ice covered sections of the climb. It was amusing to watch/experience at this point, but 2 or 3 hours later when we were walking back in the dark we found out how draining the day was. |
Panorama from the big rock on top of Upper Wolf Jaw. The rock was coated with a sheet of ice, there was only one spot on the top to stand without slipping off. |
